Sandra Tröger  –  Step by Step

Sandra Tröger (*1971, lives and works near Munich) first trained as a lithographer. She then studied Communication-Design and received her degree in 2002. Since then Sandra Tröger has been working very successfully as a free-lance Graphic Designer. She won the renowned Reddot Award twice, in 2008 and 2010. Parallel to her professional career, Sandra committed herself to painting and studied for several years at the summer academy in Bad Reichenhall i.a. with Markus Lüpertz. In 2012 she enrolled at the Munich Academy of Art where she studied painting for seven years.

We have selected three fantastically funky works from her latest series “Step by Step”

Yves Klein once said „I espoused the cause of pure colour (…), aimed to defend and deliver it, and lead it to triumph and final glory“. That aptly describes Sandra Tröger’s approach to her work.  As a painter she indulges in her material – colour is her constant companion. Her latest series makes that quite obvious: Each one of her paintings rests firmly on the tremendous power of colour: Vibrant, intense and dazzling. The chromatic planes almost radiate light into the space around them. And that is exactly what Sandra Töger is striving for: She wants to infiltrate the ordinary life with the intense vitality of her art. The day-to-day reality of modern man – we know it all – has become rather challenging in many ways. The complexity and stressfulness draw much of our energy. With her work the artist aims to invigorate the mundane existence.

The title of Sandra’s series “Step by Step” has a double meaning:

First, the visual language had to be literally worked out ‘step by step’. What seems so easy and straight forward to us is the result of a process in which she tried to hold the two most important elements of painting in balance: Form and colour. Cezanne, whose theories Sandra studied in detail, once said: “When the colour achieves richness, the form attains its fullness also”. Indeed, both depend on and can mutually reinforce each other. You can observe that in the paintings of the “Step-by-Step” series.

The saturated colours convey a wonderful luminosity and lively vitality. But the sense of strength and solidity, which the canvases convey, rest very much on the clear-cut shapes and forms.

One might easily detect that those forms were inspired by stairs and flight of steps. It is noteworthy, that Sandra is also an eager photographer and takes a special interest in modern spaces and urban structures. Architectural details and constructions are important sources of inspirations for her. The reason why Sandra was very much captivated by stairs and steps (see article „Stairs in cultural history“-section „Read art“) is largely due to their symbolic meaning: They are widely associated with accessibility, transgression, overcoming obstacles and personal development. In the cultural context stairs play an immensely important role: Just think of the “Spanish Steps” in Rom, Michelangelo’s staircase of the Laurentian Library or the “Bauhaustreppe” by Oskar Schlemmer, etcetera.

The profound art historical context and the deep metaphorical impact of stairs were translated into a swaying pictorial composition that brims with life thanks to a well thought out chromatic palette. Sandra took moments of intense scrutiny to decide what colour to start with and which colours go well together.

For each colour Sandra usually picks simply one pigment that is only mixed with a binder and nothing else. The result is a colour of absolute purity. The “Step-by-step”-paintings have a most striking impact that was created with the simplest means. The works are of a wonderfully dynamic quality, great sense of brightness and cheerful ease that uplift the mind and „wash away from the soul the dust of everyday life“ to quote Pablo Picasso.
